The International Committee of Lawyers for Tibet (ICLT) advocates self-determination for the Tibetan people. Through legal action and education, ICLT promotes human rights, environmental protection, and peaceful resolution of the situation in Tibet. A non-profit membership group, ICLT is supported by attorneys, other concerned individuals, and organizations.
As the largest nation to be colonized since the founding of the United
Nations, Tibet stands in dire need of international recognition and
intervention. Tibetans are urging the international community to pursuade
China to enter into negotiations with Tibetan representatives and to resolve
the situation in Tibet in accordance with the rule of law. Such
negotiations are urgent given the rapid cultural destruction occurring
inside Tibet as a result of harsh religious repression, suppression of the
Tibetan language in the school system, the massive population transfer of
Chinese into Tibet and coercive population control policies.
The non-violent path Tibetans follow under the extraordinary leadership of
His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the sustainable development they practice, and
the spiritual values they convey, are just a few of the reasons world peace
shares its fate with the outcome in Tibet. A peaceful resolution of the
Tibetan struggle will send a message to the world community that
international disputes can be resolved peacefully through the rule of law.
On the other hand, if such a resolution does not come about, the message to
other peoples is that only war, terrorism and violence will focus effective
international attention on their situations.
As the only organization devoted solely to legal advocacy for Tibet, ICLT is
in a unique position to further the Tibetan struggle for freedom and justice.
